First Annual Williamson County A&M Club Scholarship Dove Hunt

I had the benefit of being invited this past weekend out to Winters, Texas, near Abilene. The occassion was the first ever Williamson County A&M Club Scholarship Dove Hunt. The fabulous folks at the famous Southside Market and BBQ in Elgin were the premier sponsors of the event. Bryan, Dustin and Colby were great guys to meet.

Also, considerable thanks go to Andy Webb at Capitol City Insurance for hosting the hunt on his property out there. And personally, my good friend Chris Leschber, of Apartment Aces, for riding along and keeping me awake.

We had a real great time the whole weekend -- despite some pretty intense heat and stillness during the middle of the day. The weekend started early, on Thursday night, when everybody met in Abilene to watch the Aggies BTHO Texas State and pick up some last provisions at Wallyworld.

Friday, not many birds were seen, but we trudged about and shot at stuff. We also played this shooting game that Andy got us hooked on called "knock-out" -- I've also heard it called "Annie Oakley". Basically, 5 shooters set up in a firing line, spaced out probably about 20 yards apart. A clay target is thrown from the center of the line and the first person on the line attempts a single shot. If the shooter misses, then the person to his right can shoot and on down the line until somebody hits the target. If nobody hits the clay, then the original shooter stays in. If somebody does hit the target, the shooter is out. Either way, the next person in line becomes the first shooter for the next round. Play continues around the firing line until the last man is standing. We played 3 or 4 rounds (I can't remember, my head had started throbbing and ears started ringing by that time)... Once I managed to get second place to Bryan Bracewell, from Southside.

We also played a pile of poker and dominos and somehow didn't manage to put two and two together until mid-afternoon on Saturday when we plugged in Andy's generator to the 5th wheel that Bryan brought. It was enough to power the fans and the TV and even the A/C for a little while until the heat of the day made it too much of a draw to keep 'er running.

We even made a road trip into Abilene on Saturday night for dinner at Texas Roadhouse.

Here's a (slightly modified) picture that Andy got on Saturday evening, just as the birds had started flying...
