Random thoughts. Sometimes they're silly. Sometimes they're useful. Sometimes they're even mine.

Weekend Warrior

new saw on new work benchI spent a little time this weekend working on the last bits of our bar. Props go to Robert for having to move and offload his 8" compound miter saw. It made short work of the oak trim. And also to Ketan, since he decided he didn't need to keep the Black and Decker WorkMate the saw is currently affixed to...

The cool thing is that the miter saw is clamped into the bench vise using the dogs that the Work-Mate came with. It made for a nice and stable platform.

Although my out-rigger sawhorse (seen in the background of the picture) wasn't tall enough so I had to set it up on top of some 2x scraps as well as clamp another 2x to the top rail.

But I definitely like the setup. Here's another pic of the bar, with some tile installed (a few months ago) and the trim.

Meme-ification.

Well, I don't often enough post about others, so here's props to Barron and a meme he's got me plugged into. Here's the meme (sufficiently back-traced that I can find no origination):
  1. Go to Wikipedia.
  2. In the Search box, type your birth month and day (but not year).
  3. List three events that happened on your birthday.
  4. List two significant birthdays and deaths.
My birthday is November 5:

Events:
1872 - Women's suffrage: In defiance of the law, suffragist Susan B. Anthony votes for the first time, and is later fined $100.
1935 - Parker Brothers releases the board game Monopoly.
2004 - The Incredibles is released by Buena Vista Distribution in the United States

Births:
1911 - Roy Rogers, American actor (d. 1998)
1968 - Sam Rockwell, American film actor

Deaths:
1933 - Texas Guinan, American saloon keeper, actress, and musician (b. 1884)
1991 - Fred MacMurray, American actor (b. 1908)

Well, it's official...

The traffic headed north on 360 from 2222 has been particularly disgusting the last few days and now my commute is longer than it was when I lived in Copperfield and commuted to downtown Houston.

At least there, I had the opportunity to ride the bus -- it wasn't any faster, but I could sneak in a little quiet-time to (and fro).

School should be out in just a few days and hopefully that will alleviate some of the strain (summer trips and all...). I just think 360 is doomed to have horrible traffic and of course, with all the offices that were vacant in 2000 ramping their occupancy back up, that just means 10x as many cars with a single driver in them.

John and I try to carpool at least a couple times a week, but he telecommutes on Thursdays. And I generally have one or two days a week where I've got early-morning gigs (like Reveille) or afternoon fun (like the 8-Minute Ripple).

A long time ago, I had some "Let's Learn German" cassettes that I would listen to when commuting. Maybe it's time to dig those up and transcribe them to my iPod...

I've also thought about rotating my work schedule around so that I'm not on the road when most people are. That's tough on biz, though.

Keep the FUN in Fundraising.

Fish fry is over. The event was pretty cool. I certainly liked the location. However, attendance was down a bit (only about 550 plates or so). Lots of factors probably played into that (mother's day, baseball championships, location change, etc.).

We did good and raised some scholarship money.

Time to get ready for next year.

:-)
